Nice bounce back game for Loewen after getting beat by the Red Sox. This makes 2 solid efforts against the Yankees in the last 2 weeks. This time he went 5 and 2/3rds innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks. He struck out 5. The bullpen came in and actually pitched excellent. In an astonishing turn of events Todd Williams, Tim Byrdak, and LaTroy Hawkins pitched an inning and a third of shutout ball before Chris Ray came in to shut out the Yankees over 2 innings and get the save. The game looked like it might slip out of our grasp when CB Buckner called Melky Cabrera safe, when he was clearly out. But we managed to excape with the win.

Nick Markakis gets moved to the 2nd spot in the lineup and we win, coincidence? Maybe, but he did contribute to the run total by hitting his 6th homerun of the season. Corey Patterson hit a double and Ramon Hernandez hit a triple as part of his 2 hit game. Everyone else besides Kevin Millar and Jeff Conine hit a single. Millar, Miguel Tejada, and Jay Gibbons each had a walk and Conine had 2. Solid effort by the team and a gutsy win. Held on to a lead for once.

Markakis watch: 1-4 (.296)

Next is an afternoon game with Rodrigo Lopez (8-12, 6.20) returning to the rotation against Jaret Wright (9-6, 4.24). Go O’s.
