O’s Get Swept In Short Series, 2-4

Jeremy Guthrie gets the loss, his first, in his first start as an Oriole.

Jeremy Guthrie pitched pretty well for his first start after being in the bullpen. His stamina wasn’t at its best, but he went 5 solid innings, allowing 4 hits, 2 runs (1 earned) with a walk and 3 strikeouts. One of those runs came when Melvin Mora made an error at third base, then proceeded to throw his arms in the air and not cover 3rd base, so the runner advanced without a play. The next batter hit a sacrifice fly that wouldn’t have scored a run if the prior play hadn’t occurred. John Parrish pitched the 6th and wouldn’t have given up any runs if it wasn’t for another bone headed play. Parrish loaded the bases with 3 walks (he also gave up a base hit), but he had the bases loaded with 2 outs when he got a routine grounder to second base. Brian Roberts decided to flip it to second, where Miguel Tejada wasn’t on the bag, instead of just throwing to first. A run scored, then Parrish walked the next batter for another run. Jamie Walker pitched a scoreless 7th striking out one, Chad Bradford pitched a scoreless 8th giving up a base hit, and Danys Baez pitched a scoreless 9th.

The Orioles only had 6 hits on offense. 5 of them were for extra bases, but it only resulted in 2 runs. Brian Roberts had a single and a walk, Melvin Mora hit a double, Miguel Tejada had 2 doubles, and Aubrey Huff had a double and a triple. Nick Markakis walked, but failed to continue his hit streak. The Orioles just didn’t show up yesterday. They played weak defense and couldn’t do anything on offense against the lefty. I think they let the failure from Monday night’s game get to them. Hopefully they can right the ship tonight.

Player of the game: Aubrey Huff -  2-4, 2B, 3B, R

Boston comes in for a 2 game series tonight. Daniel Cabrera (1-1, 4.10) tries to break the 2 game skid for the O’s against Curt Schilling (2-1, 3.81) for the Red Sox. Go O’s.
