Erik Bedard might be the unluckiest pitcher in the majors right now. Despite striking out 11 batters and only walking 2 in 6 innings yesterday, Bedard gave up 4 runs on 5 hits. His BABIP (batting average for balls in play) was at almost .400, which is over .100 points higher than the average. His luck has to get better and I would look for his numbers to improve as the season goes on. Chad Bradford got 2 outs in the 7th, giving up a hit and striking out a batter. Jamie Walker came in and struck out Travis Hafner to end the inning. Danys Baez pitched a quick 8th, and Chris Ray struck out a batter in a perfect 9th for the save.

This game was a little wacky. There was a controversial play in which Miguel Tejada got doubled off at first base on a line drive to center field to end the inning, but Nick Markakis tagged from third and scored before Miggy was called out. At first, the run didn’t count. Then, 3 innings later Sam Perlozzo went out and argued with the umps, playing the game under protest. The umpire called somebody and eventually ruled the Orioles with a run. In turn, Eric Wedge, the Cleveland manager, played the game under protest. The game will be reviewed, and if the protest is upheld the game would restart at the point of contention. Anyway, the offense showed up when it was most important for once. Brian Roberts had 3 hits and stole a base. Miguel Tejada also had 3 hits and a walk. Ramon Hernandez had 2 hits, including a double and 4 RBI. Corey Patterson had another run scoring double, this time to give the O’s the lead. Chris Gomez had a single and Jay Payton had a couple of hits.

Player of the game: Ramon Hernandez -  2-4, 2B, 4 RBI

This afternoon Jaret Wright (0-2, 6.14) returns from the disabled list to face of against Fausto Carmona (1-1, 5.00) and the Indians. This would be a nice win for the O’s, if they could pull it off. Go O’s.
