The Orioles have recalled RHP Alfredo Simon and added him to the 40 man roster. RHP Kam Mickolio was optioned to AAA Norfolk and LHP Wilfredo Perez was designated for assignment to create space on the 40 man roster.
Simon was pitching great as the 5th starter down at AAA Norfolk and moved to the bullpen after RHP Brad Bergesen was sent down. He only got to pitch one inning out of relief for the Tide before being called up to the big leagues. In 17 innings he had a 1.59 ERA with 14 strikeouts and 5 walks. Hes coming off of tommy john surgery a year ago when he was a member of the O’s starting rotation. The Orioles need bullpen help in a bad way and Simon should be a nice addition. He has a power arm and can go multiple innings if needed. I like Kam Mickolio but hes having trouble with his control so he’ll be able to try and work out the kinks at AAA. I was surprised to see Perez be the one DFA’d. I figured it would be LHP Pedro Viola. Perez is an interesting pitcher so I hope he sticks around. The Orioles need RHP Koji Uehara and LHP Mike Gonzalez to get healthy so we can get rid of some of the dead weight in the bullpen. RHP Matt Albers needs to go, hes been getting crushed in high leverage situations.
