Home Run Ball Leads O’s Past A’s 9-6

W – Matt Albers (3-3)     L – Cedrick Bowers (0-1)     SV – Alfredo Simon (10)

So much for the offense being a bunch of singles hitters… The Orioles hit five homeruns last night and also a double. We got off to a good start in the 2nd inning. Luke Scott walked to lead it off and Adam Jones followed with a homerun to right field. It was a great piece of hitting that never would’ve happened a month ago. Jones has really worked to improve his approach and it looks like it working. We tacked on another run in the 3rd inning when Jones doubled in Scott, who had his second of three walks. After a huge 4th inning put the A’s in the lead 6-3 we came right back in the bottom half and got one back. After being robbed earlier in the game Corey Patterson hit a solo homerun. In the bottom of the 7th Nick Markakis walked and Ty Wiggington hit the first homerun out of the first base position for the Orioles this year. It was a clutch two run shot that tied the game at six. Scott followed it up with a solo shot of his own to give us the lead. Unfortunately he seemed to hurt himself as he was rounding the bases. It looked like a hamstring issue. The last homerun came in the 8th inning when Miguel Tejada hit a two run bomb after Patterson singled. Matt Wieters and Cesar Izturis each singled.

Kevin Millwood deserved better than his line indicates. All of the runs he gave up came in the top of the 4th inning thanks to a bunch of bad defensive plays. The inning started with an error on Miguel Tejada. An out was recorded on a fly ball but then a run scored when Ryan Sweeney singled to left field because Corey Patterson overran the ball, allowing Sweeney to take second base. The next batter hit a ball to Miguel Tejada that he couldn’t handle. It was a tough play but I think he would admit he should’ve made it. Another single scored another run and then the weirdest play of all happened. Millwood walked Cliff Pennington but Matt Wieters didn’t realize it was ball four and threw the ball to second base because the runner on first took off. Unfortunately that allowed the runner on third to “steal” home. The next batter hit a three run homer to cap it all off. Overall Millwood pitched 5 innings and allowed those 6 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks with 2 strikeouts. The bullpen continued its recent success. Mark Hendrickson pitched a scoreless 6th and Matt Albers a scoreless 7th. Will Ohman got the first out of the 8th and David Hernandez finished it off and then Alfredo Simon recorded the save with a perfect 9th. The Orioles have now won four out of the last five games and have the first winning stretch of 10 games on the season (6-4).

Player of the game: Adam Jones – 3-5, R, 3 RBI, double (10), HR (13) (.274 AVG)

Jake Arrieta (2-1, 6.20) needs a good start tonight to keep the positive stretch going. He’ll be up against Trevor Cahill (7-2, 2.88) and the rest of the Athletics.
