O’s Shut Out 8-0

W – Edwin Jackson (8-10)     L – Jake Arrieta (4-6)

It looks like we’re gonna keep alternating between wins and losses each game, which is still a vast improvement over the first four months of the season. Last night was a loss and an ugly one at that. Edwin Jackson shut down our offense as we only collected four hits on the night. Brian Roberts doubled and walked, Ty Wiggington singled and walked, Nick Markakis singled and stole a base, Felix Pie singled, and Luke Scott walked. We were 0-7 with runners in scoring position and struck out 10 times. Jake Arrieta had a rough night as he gave up 4 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks with 2 strikeouts over 4 innings. I think hes going to get shut down after a few more starts as I think hes showing signs of late season fatigue and we’ll want to keep his innings limited. I think Kevin Millwood will be removed from the roster one way or another soon too and we’ll see Rick VandenHurk and Chris Tillman in their places in the rotation. Speaking of VandenHurk he pitched 3 innings last night giving up 2 runs (one earned) on 5 hits and a walk with 3 strikeouts. Armando Gabino clinched his demotion to AAA Norfolk by giving up two runs in the 8th inning on another homerun. Hes given up three in just five outing covering 4.2 innings. Jim Johnson will be activated from the disabled list today.

The Orioles fly to LA this weekend for a series against the Angels. Brad Bergesen (5-9, 5.84) pitches tonight against Trevor Bell 1-3, 5.48) and the Angels.

W – Brian Matusz (6-12)     L – Mark Buehrle (12-10)     SV – Koji Uehara (2)

Brian Matusz is finally turning the corner and becoming the pitcher the O’s thought he would be. In four of his last five starts (including last night) hes given up one run or less. Last night he turned in 7 solid innings only allowing one run on 3 hits and a walk with 5 strikeouts. He was very impressive. The only run against him was a solo homerun that came on a pretty good pitch. Mike Gonzalez pitched a scoreless 8th inning and Koji Uehara got his second save despite giving up a run in the 9th. The Orioles scored first and took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 5th inning when Matt Wieters doubled in Felix Pie who walked and then Corey Patterson singled him in. Ty Wiggington scored our third run in the 6th after he walked, moved to third on Pie’s single, and scored on Wieters’ sacrifice fly. Brian Roberts capped it all off with a solo homerun in the 7th inning.

Player of the game: Matt Wieters – 2-3, R, 2 RBI, double (15) (.243 AVG)

Comeback Falls Short In 7-5 Loss

W – Gavin Floyd (9-10)     L – Jeremy Guthrie (7-13)     SV – Bobby Jenks (24)

Thats two starts in a row now where Jeremy Guthrie has struggled. To be fair he entered the 7th inning having only given up two runs but with the help of three double plays. He gave up four runs in the 7th before leaving with two outs. On the night he gave up 6 runs on 10 hits and 2 walks over 6.2 innings with 3 strikeouts. Matt Albers finished the 7th for him. Alfredo Simon gave up a run on three hits in the 8th inning. The Orioles entered the 9th inning trailing 7-2 and scored three runs before running out of outs. After a Cesar Izturis walk and Josh Bell single, Brian Roberts hit an RBI single. A wild pitch advanced the runners and a Nick Markakis single scored another run. Roberts scored on Ty Wiggington’s double play which unfortunately killed the rally. We scored our first two runs in the 4th inning when Luke Scott led off with a solo homerun. Adam Jones was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on Felix Pie’s single, and scored on Matt Wieters’ ground out. Pie had three hits in the game, including a double. Roberts and Markakis each singled twice.

Player of the game: Felix Pie – 3-4, double (10) (.299 AVG)

Tonight a pair of lefties face off in game two of the series as Brian Matusz (5-12, 4.97) and Mark Buehrle (12-9, 3.87) are scheduled to pitch.

Series Split After 6-4 Loss

W – Tommy Hunter (10-2)     L – Kevin Millwood (2-14)     SV – Neftali Feliz (31)

The Millwood jinx continues. He gave up two three run homers yesterday and that was enough to give Texas the win. The first one came in the 1st inning, which continues to haunt Millwood this year. He ended up pitching 6 innings giving up those 6 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks with 2 strikeouts. Rick VandenHurk finally made his Oriole debut and looked good. He walked the first batter he faced but picked him off and then struck out two batters. Mark Hendrickson pitched a scoreless 8th despite giving up two hits and a walk and Matt Albers tossed a scoreless 9th inning. Tommy Hunter really confounded the Orioles bats. Other than an RBI single by Nick Markakis and a two run homer from Luke Scott he was able to hold us to three runs on five hits. Brian Roberts doubled and Ty Wiggington and Felix Pie singled off him. Wiggington also hit a solo homerun in the 9th inning for the O’s sixth hit but it wasn’t enough to get us back into the game. Theres nothing wrong with splitting a series with a first place team, especially when you’re in last place of the american league.

Player of the game: Ty Wiggington – 2-4, 2 R, RBI, HR (20) (.255 AVG)

The O’s get a much needed day off today before traveling to Chicago for a three game series. Jeremy Guthrie (7-12, 3.97) kicks it off against Gavin Floyd (8-10, 3.97) in game one.

Bats Come Alive In 8-6 Win

W – Brad Bergesen (5-9)     L – Cliff Lee (10-7)     SV – Koji Uehara (1)

Buck Showalter said it best to the O’s reporters after the game. It was the Josh Bell show out there yesterday afternoon. Bell has been labeled as a switch hitter that can’t hit lefties. Well yesterday he could. Against one of the best lefties in MLB, Cliff Lee, Bell went 3-3 with two homeruns and another ball of the very top of the wall. They were the first two homeruns of his career and he had to settle for a single on the third hit. The first homer was a two run shot after Felix Pie singled. After Ty Wiggington and Luke Scott hit back to back homeruns in the 4th, Bell hit his second of the game – a three run shot – after Pie and Craig Tatum singled. The O’s eighth run came on Julio Lugo’s RBI single that scored Bell. Bell also made a great play in the field on a weak grounder that he bare handed and made a strong throw to first to get the runner. Brad Bergesen wasn’t as sharp as he has been yesterday but he was able to get through 7 innings, giving up 5 runs on 9 hits and 2 walks with 3 strikeouts. Mike Gonzalez gave up a run in the 8th but struck out two batters and Koji Uehara picked up the first save of his MLB career with a scoreless 9th, ending it by striking out Vladimir Guerrero. It makes sense to make Koji the closer because he has been dominant out of the bullpen over the last two months.

Player of the game: Josh Bell – 3-4, 3 R, 5 RBI, 2 HR (2) (.244 AVG)

The series ends today with Kevin Millwood (2-13, 5.49) pitching against Tommy Hunter (9-2, 3.71) as the O’s try to win the series.
