O’s Fail To Sweep Again 6-2

W – Justin Verlander (16-8)     L – Mike Gonzalez (0-3)

- Chris Tillman had an impressive start, holding the Tigers to one run over 6.2 innings on one hit and 6 walks and 4 strikeouts. The walks weren’t impressive but the fact that he got 10 ground ball outs compared to 5 fly ball outs was. He was able to work deep into the game despite the walks and the Orioles entered the bottom of the 8th inning with a 2-1 lead, Tillman in line for the win.
- Mike Gonzalez recorded the last out of the 7th inning but proceeded to give up a single and a double to start off the 8th. David Hernandez came in and walked a pinch hitter before giving up a bases clearing double to Miguel Cabrera to give Detroit the lead for good. He got the next two batters out but was then pulled in favor of Alfredo Simon
- Simon promptly gave up a two run homer to Brandon Inge to bring us to our final score. Simon has given up 10 homeruns over 47 innings and has to be working himself out of the Orioles’ plans for next season.
- The offense scored two runs in the top of the 5th inning to take a one run lead that almost lasted. Felix Pie singled with one out, stole second base, and scored on Jake Fox’s triple. Fox would score on a wild pitch one batter later.
- Not many baserunners other than that. Brian Roberts walked and stole a base, Luke Scott walked, and Ty Wiggington, Nick Markakis, and Robert Andino each singled in the game.
- Brandon Snyder received his first start at first base and went 0-3 in his first major league at bats. I’d like to see more of him over the last three weeks of the season.

Player of the game: Chris Tillman – 6.2 IP, H, ER, 6 BB, 4 K (6.32 ERA)

Its back home tonight after our second consecutive winning road trip. Brian Matusz (8-12, 4.71) looks to continue the string of quality starts against the Blue Jays and Marc Rzepczynski (1-4, 6.47).

O’s Keep Rollin’ With 5-3 Victory

W – Jeremy Guthrie (10-13)     L – Max Scherzer (10-10)     SV – Koji Uehara (9)

- Jeremy Guthrie has been one of the best pitchers in baseball in the second half and that continued last night as he blanked the Tigers over 7 innings, holding them to 5 hits and a walk with 4 strikeouts. Since the all-star break Guthrie is 7-3 with a 2.29 ERA over 11 starts with 46 strikeouts and 13 walks over 78.2 innings.
- Matt Albers came in for the 8th inning with the Orioles winning 4-0 but he gave up three runs on four hits to bring the Tigers back within one run. It was the first outing Albers had given up a run in since August 14th.
- Koji Uehara pitched a perfect 9th with two strikeouts as he continues his impressive work as closer.
- The O’s had 16 hits but only scored five runs, four in the top of the 6th inning. Back to back doubles from Adam Jones and Felix Pie scored the first run. Josh Bell singled and then Cesar Iztris tripled to score two more. Ty Wiggington’s sacrifice fly closed out the scoring in the inning.
- We scored an insurance run in the 9th when Matt Wieters doubled with two outs, Jones was intentionally walked, and Pie singled to score Wieters.
- Jones was four for four with a walk. Pie and Brian Roberts each had three hits. Wieters had two hits and everyone else in the lineup other than Wiggington had one. Wiggington walked in the game.

Player of the game: Adam Jones – 4-4, R, BB, double (21) (.283 AVG)

The Orioles will go for the sweep this afternoon. On paper it doesn’t look good with Chris Tillman (1-4, 7.42) matching up with Justin Verlander (15-8, 3.53).

O’s Win 6-3 In The Late Innings

W – David Hernandez (6-8)     L – Phil Coke (7-5)     SV – Koji Uehara (8)

- Kevin Millwood had another quality start, quietly putting together 5 out of his last 7 starts. Despite giving up another 1st inning run he was able to hold the Tigers to 3 runs (2 earned) on 8 hits and a walk with 3 strikeouts over 6 innings. Matt Wieters didn’t help him out when he dropped a pop up and then Miguel Cabrera followed with a two run homer in the bottom of the 6th.
- David Hernandez did a great job getting out of his own trouble in the 7th. He gave up a lead off triple but stranded him there after getting a pop out and striking out the last two batters. He got the win after the Orioles took the lead in the top of the 8th inning.
- Jim Johnson pitched a scoreless 8th and then Koji Uehara rebounded nicely from his blown save, walk off loss in New York on Wednesday and pitched a perfect 9th to record his 8th save.
- The Orioles tied the game in the top of the 2nd when Luke Scott and Matt Wieters singled back to back and Adam Jones grounded into a double play, allowing Scott to score.
- Jake Fox gave us a temporary lead in the top of the 5th, hitting a two run homer after Jones was hit by a pitch.
- The O’s took the lead for good in the top of the 8th. We loaded the bases with back to back singles from Ty Wiggington and Nick Markakis and an intentional walk to Scott. Wieters lifted a sacrifice flyto score the first run and Jones singled to score another.
- Fox led off with a double in the 9th inning. Corey Patterson pinch ran for him and moved to third on a ground out before scoring on Brian Roberts’ sacrifice fly for an extra insurance run.

Player of the game: Jake Fox – 2-4, R, 2 RBI, double (9), HR (7) (.224 AVG)

Jeremy Guthrie (9-13, 3.89) starts game two tonight, looking for his 10th win of the season against Max Scherzer (10-9, 3.51) in Detroit.

Koji Blows First Save In 3-2 Loss

W – Joba Chamberlain (3-4)     L – Koji Uehara (1-1)

- Brad Bergesen pitched a hell of a game and deserved to come away with the victory. He twirled 6.1 innings of one run ball on 4 hits and 2 walks with 5 strikeouts. He got nine ground ball outs and his stuff actually looks better than it did in his successful rookie season, as evidenced by the strikeouts of late.
- Koji Uehara cost Bergesen the win, blowing his first save since becoming the closer. He gave up a lead off single in the bottom of the 9th, then got an out, but Nick Swisher took him deep ending the game. Even hall of fame closers blow a save every once in a while but it still stings.
- Mark Hendrickson replaced Bergesen in the 7th to face a lefty and he struck him out. Jim Johnson followed suit with a right handed pinch hitter and gave up a single, but was able to end the inning without allowing a run. He also pitched a scoreless 8th.
- The Orioles only runs came on Matt Wieters’ two run homer in the top of the 5th inning. It was a bomb to the opposite field, an impressive shot that gave the Orioles the lead and looked like a win. Wieters has been on fire in September, just like last year. He owns this month.
- Adam Jones singled twice, Brian Roberts doubled, Nick Markakis singled and walked, and Josh Bell singled for our other hits in the game.

Player of the game: Brad Bergesen – 6.1 IP, 4 H, ER, 2 BB, 5 K (5.29 ERA)

The Orioles have off tomorrow before flying into Detroit. Kevin Millwood (3-15, 5.38) gets the series started against Armando Galarraga (4-5, 3.89), who pitches for the Tigers.

Another Win In New York 6-2

W – Jake Arrieta (5-6)     L – CC Sabathia (19-6)

- The Orioles spoiled CC Sabathia’s attempt at winning his 20th game. In fact they gave him his first loss at Yankee stadium in 22 starts.
- The Orioles jumped on Sabathia for three runs in the 1st inning. The first five batters of the game reached base. Brian Roberts singled, Felix Pie walked, and Nick Markakis singled to load the bases. Ty Wiggington singled in a run and then Adam Jones singled in two more.
- Nolan Reimold blasted a two run homer into the upper deck in the 3rd inning to increase the Orioles lead to 5-1. Wiggington scored on the play after hitting his 26th double of the season. The homerun was Reimold’s first since being recalled from AAA Norfolk.
- The O’s added an insurance run in the 7th when Markakis singled in Josh Bell who reached on an error and moved to third on a Roberts single.
- Jake Arrieta had a good outing, facing the Yankees for the first time since his major league debut. He got into the 7th inning last night, allowing 2 runs on 8 hits and a walk with 3 strikeouts.
- Arrieta got one out in the 7th but left with runners on first and third. Matt Albers came in and was able to get out of the jam without allowing a run to score. He also went on to pitch a scoreless 8th inning.
- Mark Hendrickson pitched a perfect 9th inning with a strikeout. Hes been effective lately aside from one bad outing.

Player of the game: Ty Wiggington – 2-4, R, RBI, double (26) (.252 AVG)

The series ends this afternoon when Brad Bergesen (6-10, 5.47) tries to give the Orioles their first sweep of the Yankees in New York since 1986. Rookie Ivan Nova (1-0, 2.89) pitches for the Yanks.

Bullpen Help Arrives

The Orioles have activated RHP David Hernandez from the disabled list, recalled LHP Troy Patton from AAA Norfolk and LHP Pedro Viola from AA Bowie.

Hernandez returns from his sprained MCL injury after a few weeks of rest and two rehab outings. For AA Bowie he pitched 2 innings without allowing a run, allowing one hit and striking out 3 batters. Before his injury Hernandez was establishing himself as a late inning relief pitcher. Prior to going on the disabled list he was 5-8 with a 4.52 ERA over 69.2 innings with 60 strikeouts and 37 walks. He’ll return to his previous role but might be eased into it with a few middle inning appearances. Troy Patton will make his third trip to Baltimore this year, although the next inning he throws will be his first. He wasn’t used in his first two promotions but he did pitch better after returning to AAA Norfolk. On the season he was 8-11 with a 4.43 ERA over 136 innings with 89 strikeouts and 43 walks but he has a 3.46 ERA over his last 10 starts. I’ll be interested to see what he can do out of the bullpen for us. I’m surprised Pedro Viola got the call over Dennis Sarfate but I’m guessing they want to see what they have in him since hes on the 40 man roster. There are sure to be some acquisitions in the offseason and theres a good chance he’ll be a roster casualty when that happens. He struggled mightily at AAA Norfolk to start the year with a 17.65 ERA over 8.2 innings with 8 strikeouts and 10 walks but did better after being demoted to AA Bowie. He went 3-4 with a 3.59 ERA over 62.2 innings with 64 strikeouts and 19 walks. I don’t expect him to be good enough to make the team next year but we’ll see what he can do in mop up duty.

O’s Kick Off New York Series With 4-3 Win

W – Brian Matusz (8-12)     L – AJ Burnett (10-13)     SV – Koji Uehara (7)

- Brian Matusz gave us a quality start allowing 3 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks with 4 strikeouts over 6 innings. Thats pretty good when you’re facing that Yankees lineup. Matusz is lining himself up for a break out season next year.
- The bullpen had a great night. Matt Albers pitched a scoreless 7th, Jim Johnson a scoreless 8th, and Koji Uehara notched a perfect 9th inning with two strikeouts to record his 7th save.
- Brian Roberts had a big day with three singles, two of them bringing in a run.
- Nick Markakis continued his steady climb out of his slump with a single and a walk in four plate appearances.
- Josh Bell had a single and a double and Cesar Izturis turned in a double of his own.
- The only other hits were singles from Felix Pie and Corey Patterson but Luke Scott and Matt Wieters each walked twice.
- This win made three in a row to bounce back from that three game losing streak. This team is just different (better) under Buck Showalter.

Player of the game: Brian Roberts – 3-5, 2 RBI (.280 AVG)

O’s Hold On 8-7 To Win Series

W – Alfredo Simon (4-2)     L – Dan Wheeler (2-2)     SV – Koji Uehara (6)

- Chris Tillman made his return to the major leagues by holding the Rays to 3 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks over 5.1 innings with 4 strikeouts. Two of the six hits were homeruns and two more were triples.
- Jim Johnson finished the 6th inning but not before giving up four hits and allowing two runs on a homerun by BJ Upton.
- After the Orioles took a three run lead in the bottom of the 6th, Mike Gonzalez gave two runs right back on a homerun by Rocco Baldelli.
- Alfredo Simon earned the win by pitching a clean 8th inning. The official scorer rewarded him the win since Johnson and Gonzalez weren’t very effective.
- Koji Uehara picked up his 6th save and redeemed himself from his outing the night before, having given up back to back homeruns. He struck out two batters in a perfect 9th.
- The Orioles jumped out to an eraly 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Brian Roberts singled, stole second base, and scored on Nick Markakis’ single. Corey Patterson hit a sacrifice fly after walks to Luke Scott and Felix Pie.
- Two more came in the bottom of the 3rd when Patterson hit a two run homer after another Pie walk.
- The O’s repsnded immediately after Tampa Bay’s big inning with four runs in the bottom of the 6th. Craig Tatum and Cesar Izturis walked and Josh Bell hit an RBI single. Roberts and Markakis each followed with RBI singles of their own and Scott hit a sacrifice fly after Ty Wiggington walked to load the bases.
